My Little Pony: Tails of Equestria

My Little Pony: Tails of Equestria is the official family-friendly tabletop RPG from River Horse. You create a pony and team up to solve problems with kindness, clever ideas, and cooperation. Stories feel whimsical, brave, and funny, with challenges that reward friendship over fighting. It is great for mixed ages and new players, yet still charming for seasoned gamers who want something cozy. This page is for the Tails of Equestria line released in 2017, not the separate My Little Pony Roleplaying Game by Renegade Game Studios using Essence20.

A typical session feels like an episode come to life. Explore Ponyville and beyond, meet colourful NPCs, and work together to uncover what the world needs from your ponies. A professional Game Master keeps the tone gentle and the pace lively, perfect for birthdays, classrooms, and team events. It runs smoothly with 2 to 6 players in 60 to 120 minutes, in person or online. Meet our Game Masters and find the right fit for your group.

How to play My Little Pony: Tails of Equestria

Each pony has three core traits: Body, Mind, and Charm, each associated with a die size ranging from a small die to a larger one. When you attempt something risky, the Game Master sets a difficulty level. You roll the die for the most relevant trait and aim to meet or exceed that number. Talents and magic can provide an advantage. Tokens of Friendship allow you to reroll or support a friend, and you can share them. Setbacks reduce Stamina, leading to complications rather than serious harm, maintaining a kind and hopeful tone.

You bring your imagination and a willingness to collaborate. Our Game Master provides character sheets, straightforward rules guidance, and a tailored adventure, along with any handouts or maps. One-shots tell a complete story with a clear goal in 60 to 120 minutes. Campaigns build on that, featuring ongoing friendships, new locations, and gradual advancement for your pony. We can run sessions in person or online using tools listed on our online play platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should we learn about the show or the rules first?

You don’t need to know any rules or trivia about the show. A professional Game Master will explain the basics in just a few minutes and guide you as you play. The system uses simple dice and clear choices, making it ideal for first-time players and those of mixed ages. If you enjoy the TV series, you’ll appreciate the fun references, but newcomers will feel right at home. Character sheets and all materials are provided. If you’d like to discuss tone or difficulty before booking, you can meet our Game Masters and choose someone who fits your group.

How is this different from D&D?

Tails of Equestria is rules-light and story-first. You roll one trait die to try things, with teamwork and clever ideas mattering more than stats. Problems are usually solved by talking, helping, or outwitting, not by tactical combat or loot. Setbacks create complications rather than harsh injury or character death. Advancement is gentle, and the vibe stays bright and hopeful. If your group prefers crunchy battles, grids, and character optimization, D&D may suit better. If you want collaborative, kid-friendly adventures, this is a great choice. Compare options on our game systems overview.

What age groups is it best suited for? Will adults find it enjoyable?

Most tables are suitable for kids aged 6 to 12, along with teens or adults. While reading can be beneficial, it is not necessary, as the GM can guide choices and roll alongside you. The content remains kind, silly, and adventurous, steering clear of grim themes. Adults also have a great time, especially if you enjoy improv, puzzles, and uplifting stories. For younger players, we can shorten scenes and incorporate more visual aids. Let the GM know your group’s ages and comfort levels, and the session will be adjusted accordingly.

Is this the same as the Renegade MLP RPG?

This booking is for My Little Pony: Tails of Equestria by River Horse. It employs a straightforward dice-per-trait system from the 2017 line. This is distinct from Renegade Game Studios’ My Little Pony Roleplaying Game, which follows the Essence20 rules. If you specifically want Essence20, please mention it in your request so the GM can provide guidance. For a pony-focused, rules-light experience that captures the essence of the Friendship is Magic show, Tails of Equestria is the game you are booking here.

How does conflict function in this context? Is there combat involved?

Challenges focus on problem-solving and kindness. When situations become risky, you roll Body, Mind, or Charm against a difficulty. Losing Stamina results in setbacks such as getting stuck, needing a break, or missing an opportunity, rather than grim violence. You earn and spend Tokens of Friendship to reroll or assist someone else, which encourages teamwork. If a scuffle occurs, it is handled at a cartoon level, and the GM guides players towards creative resolutions and apologies instead of simply winning a fight.

How long should characters be? Can we use our OCs?

Starting fresh takes about 10 to 20 minutes. You choose your pony type, assign dice to Body, Mind, and Charm, select a Talent and a Quirk, and envision a cutie mark along with a friend or two. Pre-generated ponies are available if you want to dive right in, and we can customise them with names and colours. You can also bring your own original character idea, and the GM will assist in translating it. Unicorn magic and pegasus flight fit naturally, ensuring your concept aligns with the setting.

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a really good job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot and yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I truly appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his expertise in the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared. Punctual. And had a wonderful sense of humour.
