Vagabond

Vagabond immerses you in a rugged landscape, from crumbling roads to dense forest trails. You navigate a route, manage supplies and equipment, and contend with weather, wildlife, and cautious townsfolk. The pace is steady and tense. Decisions are significant, but quiet moments around the campfire are important too. Players appreciate it for its grounded stakes, tangible progress, and narratives that feel earned by the end of the journey.

It is easy to grasp and encourages teamwork and planning. Ideal for newcomers, veterans, families, birthdays, and team retreats. Suitable for in-person or online play, with the tone set by you, whether gentle or gritty. A professional Game Master ensures fair pressure, brings vibrant locations and NPCs to life, and transforms setbacks into meaningful choices. Ready to find the right guide for your table? How to play Vagabond

On your turn, you describe what your character does. When the outcome is risky or costly, you roll dice and the Game Master assists in interpreting the result. Travel scenes alternate with obstacles, encounters, and camping. The rules remain straightforward so that discussions at the table and rolls are quick. The GM keeps track of supplies and increasing danger, ensuring you always understand the stakes and can decide how much risk to take.

Bring a character concept and a readiness to make tough decisions. The Game Master offers rules reminders, maps, and pre-generated characters if you want to jump in quickly. A one-shot focuses on a specific path with a clear objective and a satisfying conclusion. A campaign follows a longer journey, building connections with settlements, changing seasons, and plans for the long term. Playing online is easy; see online play platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know any rules to play?

No. Vagabond is straightforward to learn at the table. A professional Game Master explains the basics as you play. You describe what your traveller attempts, and you roll only when the outcome is risky or costly. Most of the game involves discussing plans, deciding how to use limited supplies, and choosing routes together. If you prefer to skip setup, pre-generated characters are available. If you enjoy customization, the GM will assist with quick choices so you can begin your journey without a lengthy rules briefing.

How does Vagabond differ from D&D?

Vagabond focuses on the journey rather than dungeons or high magic. The tension arises from the weather, worn paths, and cautious communities, with practical challenges like food, fatigue, and trust. Combat is infrequent and perilous, and the rules are simplified, allowing story and planning to take precedence. Progress feels earned through smart decisions rather than leveling curves. If you appreciate arduous travel, small victories, and teamwork over spectacle, this will resonate with you. Curious how it compares across the hobby? What is a typical session like?

You choose a destination, examine the map, and set off. Travel scenes alternate with challenges like inclement weather, damaged bridges, and tense encounters. At camp, you check supplies, share moments between characters, and plan for the next day. Dice are rolled only when outcomes are uncertain, keeping table talk engaging. A one-shot covers a straightforward route with a clear beginning and end in 2 to 3 hours. A campaign follows a longer path, featuring changing seasons, deepening connections to settlements, and evolving group objectives.

What group size and ages are most suitable?

Vagabond works best with 2 to 5 players. It is suitable for children, and a professional Game Master can adjust the tone and content to accommodate families or mixed-age groups. The emphasis on cooperation and practical problem-solving ensures that everyone stays engaged, including shy or new players. Challenges remain fair, and the GM manages the rules so younger players can concentrate on their choices. If you prefer a more intense tone, that can be arranged as well, but it is always discussed beforehand and customised for your group.

Is the survival tough, or can we keep it mild?

You choose. Vagabond offers meaningful consequences, but the experience can shift from comfortable frontier travel to tougher challenges. Running low on supplies will lead to complications, not immediate failure. Setbacks turn into new choices, such as altering your route, seeking assistance, or risking worn equipment. The GM monitors pressure behind the scenes and maintains clear stakes, allowing you to decide when to take risks and when to play it safe. Families often prefer a more inviting tone, while experienced groups may request something with more edge.

Can we play Vagabond online?

Yes. It runs smoothly over voice or video with simple shared maps and trackers. You do not need a complex virtual tabletop. A professional Game Master provides all necessary materials and keeps rolls and inventory easy to follow. The light rules make online pacing comfortable, with quick checks and ample room for conversation. If you want to see common tools used for online sessions, take a look here: online play platforms.

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a really good job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot and yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I truly appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his expertise in the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared. Punctual. And had a wonderful sense of humour.
