Survival Horror

Dark corridors, flickering lights, and a plan that keeps falling apart. You scavenge for supplies, barricade doors, and whisper over the table as footsteps draw near. Not every threat can be confronted. You weigh risk against time, improvise distractions, and search for codes that unlock the next way out. The fear builds from what you cannot see, until it is right there. A survival horror session feels like a scramble to endure, escape, or outsmart the thing that hunts you, while keeping the group together.

At the table, this genre shines because pressure creates focus. Clear stakes, limited resources, and team decisions make every turn significant. It is ideal for one-shots and short campaigns, and it works well online or in person. Beginners who enjoy tense stories pick it up quickly, while veterans appreciate careful planning and tough choices. Families with teens can opt for a lighter scare level. For corporate teams, it can highlight communication and trust, with safety tools and debriefs ensuring everyone leaves feeling energized, not shaken.

Our Game Masters often run survival horror in Call of Cthulhu, Alien, Mothership, Dread with a tumbling block tower, Delta Green, or Ten Candles. The tone is adjustable, ranging from bleak and deadly to exciting creature-feature thrills. You can set boundaries on gore and themes, choose mystery over body horror, and adjust lethality, resource scarcity, and clue density. If you have a preferred system, just ask. Frequently Asked Questions

What sets survival horror apart from other horror games?

Survival horror revolves around scarcity and risk. Characters are vulnerable, resources are limited, and fleeing or hiding is often wiser than engaging in combat. Noise, light, and time draw danger, making choices significant. Clues and problem-solving are just as important as fighting. The atmosphere remains tense and subdued, with sudden spikes of tension when a plan goes awry. If you’re looking for exhilarating monster fights, choose a different genre. However, if the idea of managing batteries, barricades, and deciding which door to open next excites you, this is the perfect fit.

Which game systems are best suited for survival horror?

Alien and Mothership heighten tension with stress and panic that escalate under pressure. Call of Cthulhu and Delta Green centre on investigation and vulnerable investigators confronting the unknown. Dread substitutes dice with a tumbling block tower, making every pull tremble the table. Ten Candles is tragic and atmospheric, designed to burn down to darkness. A professional Game Master will recommend rules that suit your tone, from gritty to more light-hearted. To explore options, see the game systems overview.

Is survival horror appropriate for beginners or teenagers?

Yes, if they enjoy suspense and teamwork. The rules can be kept light, and a professional Game Master explains the procedures before the tension builds. Safety tools and content boundaries are established at the beginning. The tone can lean towards suspenseful rather than graphic, with threats suggested more than displayed. Teens who enjoy puzzles and stealth excel, as careful choices are more important than system mastery. If someone feels anxious, a professional Game Master can incorporate more safe pauses, clearer clues, and gentler consequences.

What occurs in a survival horror one-shot?

You dive right into a pressing issue, such as evacuating a facility or getting to a safe room. Anticipate scavenging, careful planning, locked doors or codes, and difficult decisions regarding noise and time. Threats intensify as resources diminish, and a revelation or twist limits your choices. The conclusion demands a tough trade-off to either escape or contain the danger. Character loss is a possibility, but a skilled Game Master ensures that eliminated players stay engaged with backup roles or brief framed scenes, followed by a short debrief.

    Danny

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a really good job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot and yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I truly appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his expertise in the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared. Punctual. And had a wonderful sense of humour.
